Do you know what to look for when buying a used car? Doing your due diligence ahead of time will equip you with the tools and knowledge you need to buy a pre-loved vehicle that’s just right for your situation.

Whether you’re in the market for top-quality Japanese used cars or a stylish European import, we’ve got the tips you need to know exactly what you’re buying.

1. Read Up On the Car’s History

Conduct thorough research of the vehicle and collect a thorough AA vehicle history check. This important, in-depth document provides all of the details and information you need to know about the car, such as the status of the vehicle license and certificate of fitness. The report provides information on the age and model of the car, whether it has been in an accident, its mileage, if there’s any debt owing on it, the number of previous owners, as well as its crash rating.

2. Personally Inspect the Car

Car finance applications at Auckland dealerships are typically affected by the functionality of a vehicle, so it pays to inspect all the components. Make a thorough inspection of the vehicle, looking out for any damages to the surface such as rust, dents, or paint chips. Of course, you can’t expect a used car to be in flawless condition, but you should still be on the lookout for blemishes such as corrosion and rust that could lead to expensive repairs further down the road.

Be sure to check if there are any problems with the frame of the vehicle and if all of the components are correctly aligned and properly attached. Ensure that the ground clearance of the car is correct to the model—that it is not visibly too low or high off the ground. Carefully inspect the bumpers, trunk, and hood of the vehicle, making sure that there are no obvious missing screws or nuts. Oh, and don’t forget to check the oil!

At MotorCo, all our cars undergo a full mechanical inspection and service before we put them on our lot, so you can be confident everything will check out.

3. Check the Interior of the Vehicle

Inspect the inside of the vehicle, making sure all the seatbelts work and that all the seats are intact and adjustable. Look for any blemishes such as stains or rips on the fabrics and carpets, as these can indicate that the possibility of a pest infestation.

It’s important to note that many mechanics overlook the interior of the vehicle because they do not consider interior components to be vital to the overall operability of the vehicle. Test out all the electronic devices in the vehicle such as the air conditioning, radio, stereo, and monitor display to make sure they are working. This inspection also includes the operability of software such as GPS, Bluetooth and reverse camera.

Don’t forget to check the radio’s frequency range as well, as some Japanese import vehicles can’t reach some of New Zealand’s popular stations. We at MotorCo can help you install an aftermarket radio if necessary, that gives you access to your favourite tunes.

Buying a used car in Auckland can be an intimidating process. There are so many models available, and so much jargon thrown about that it can be easy to get overwhelmed. The first choice a potential buyer will have to make is whether to buy a car through a private sale or a dealership. Today we run through the key benefits of buying a car through a dealership vs a private seller.

An Easier Process

Buying your car through an Auckland car dealer is going to be a much simpler process than buying privately, and this is due to a couple of key reasons:

More Time

When buying from a dealership you have a lot more time to decide on the purchase. Dealerships will keep their yards filled with many cars that may interest you which gives you enough time to make a choice you are truly comfortable with, while a private seller will often be an auction sale for a single vehicle. This can lead to feeling overly pressured to make an offer even if you’re not sure about the purchase.

Flexible Payments

The ability to structure payments to suit you is another way that buying through a dealership makes car buying easier. Private sales will often demand full cash up front with no ability to provide finance or flexible payment plans, but dealerships have a range of finance and payment options to suit your financial situation, making it easier to get on the road sooner.

Consumer Rights & Peace of Mind

Another benefit to buying through a dealership is quality, warranties, and peace of mind.

Higher Quality Vehicles

With a dealership, you are more likely to buy a higher quality vehicle. Dealerships, unlike individual private sellers, have reputations to uphold with their customer base. This means they spend more time curating their stock to ensure they’re selling only the most reliable vehicles to their customers. This means you can be more confident in the information provided by the dealership about the state of the vehicle and can make a more informed decision based on their advice.

Consumer Guarantees Act

Prospective buyers have many more consumer rights when buying a used or new vehicle from a car dealership as compared to a private sale, because dealers must comply with the Consumer Guarantees Act, the Fair Trading Act, be registered (and meet the requirements that come with that), and are obligated to give you accurate information regarding the vehicle you are purchasing. The Consumer Guarantees Act specifically states that a vehicle should be of acceptable quality, fit for purpose, and be “as described” by the dealership.

These guarantees will give you that extra peace of mind to allow you to buy a vehicle with confidence.

What is the Compliance Process of Importing a Vehicle? https://motorco.co.nz/articles/compliance-process Sun, 26 Sep 2021 23:06:00 +0000 https://motorco.co.nz/articles/ New Zealand road regulations are known for being among the toughest in the world for vehicle safety, as the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) enforces strict standards of quality for what vehicles are considered roadworthy. New Zealand road regulations are known for being among the toughest in the world for vehicle safety, as the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) enforces strict standards of quality for what vehicles are considered roadworthy. All imported vehicles are required to undergo inspection and a compliance/registration process known as entry certification.

Road authorities in other countries also apply their own standard of quality inspections before exporting any vehicles. Japan in particular is known for transparency, grading all used car exports from 1 to 5, and providing documents that indicate if the car was involved in an accident or if it was stolen. Japanese car imports are therefore held in high regard for their standard of quality—one of the reasons why the automobile giant is the world’s largest exporter of used vehicles.

Most vehicles in New Zealand are imported from Japan, of which 42% are second-hand. Japan also has strict road regulations, requiring all vehicles to undergo rigorous inspections every two years, and it’s these inspections that encourage many Japanese citizens to sell their older vehicles and buy new ones. The result is an endless supply and large-scale export of Japanese used cars to other countries, including New Zealand.

NZTA Compliance Process

When an imported vehicle arrives to New Zealand, it is inspected upon entry by a third-party inspector known as a Transport Service Delivery (TSD) agent, appointed by four of New Zealand’s largest automobile services designated by the Government. This agent collects all the relevant information and documentation about the imported vehicle to confirm the vehicle’s history, and to ensure that it doesn’t fail to meet New Zealand road standards.

Following its arrival to the country, the vehicle is disassembled, and the interior is inspected by the TSD agent who examines the condition of the seats and any parts that have previously been repaired. Everything is fully refitted upon the completion of this stage of the inspection process.

The vehicle is then hoisted and checked underneath for any signs of rust or deterioration. All the panels are stripped for the TSD agent to make a thorough inspection and measurement of the vehicle’s internal organs such as the engine, the brakes, the various pipes, and the tyres. After being put back together, the vehicles operability is checked with the testing of its braking systems, mobility, lighting, and fuel emissions. If NZTA standards are not satisfied, a NZTA fail sheet is produced and a list of required repairs are outlined for the importer to complete.

After all these procedures are completed, a Warrant of Fitness sticker is issued along with a MR2A registration form, which certifies that the vehicle is safe to drive. It’s strongly recommended to study the documentation provided by the vehicle’s country of origin, so that you are fully aware of the car’s condition and can avoid any unexpected vehicle compliance costs in NZ.

Vehicle Regulation Focuses on Safety Not Quality

Because the NZTA compliance process is focused only on making a vehicle safe to drive, it usually ignores damage that might be classified as only an inconvenience, or a matter of appearance. For example, snow tires, which are unsuitable for Auckland roads, are not required to be replaced, but may be relevant to you. Some other things that might be overlooked included non-functional power windows, or scratches to the car exterior.

At MotorCo, we fix these issues for you, because we want a car that is mechanically sound with no faults. We care about quality, so we go the extra mile and don’t import any vehicles that have been in an accident. We also keep high standards by only importing Japanese vehicles that are graded 3.5/5 or higher by Japanese inspectors. Check out our range of vehicles here and organize a viewing.

It’s hard to deny that Kiwis love their cars—New Zealand has the third highest motor vehicles per capita in the world, with 837 vehicles per 1000 people.

One of the most popular brands sold in New Zealand is Mazda. In 2018, the Japanese auto giant boasted global sales of over 1.6 million light vehicles, including approximately 10,000 vehicles sold in New Zealand alone, making it the country’s second most popular auto company in terms of sales, just behind Toyota. Mazda’s vehicles are renowned for being efficient, reliable, and affordable. In this blog post, we’re looking at the three most popular models to help you find the best one for you: the CX-5, MAZDA3, and the CX-30.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is the company’s most popular model with 3,695 CX-5s sold in New Zealand in 2018. This SUV is popular for many reasons, including its slick attractive design, stability, effortless acceleration, spacious interior, and next level technology.

An exceptional array of safety technology is utilized by the Mazda CX-5 with autonomous gadgets such as a Smart Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning, Lane-keep Assist System, Blind Spot Monitor and Mazda Radar Cruise Control. The vehicle uses 27 sensors to monitor, assess and respond to any road hazards or changes in driving conditions.

Its Smart Brake Support system is particularly impressive. It uses a radar to detect pedestrians and warn of forward-collisions, and it automatically applies the brake if there is an immediate danger of collision. Lane Departure Warning monitors also alert you if you stray from your lane, and a Lane-keep Assist System will apply corrective steering if needed.

A Radar Cruise Control system adjusts your speed to maintain a safe distance from the car ahead of you and can apply a “Stop & Go”—halting your car when the traffic stops and taking off when the traffic moves again.

Mazda Axela (MAZDA 3)

The Mazda Axela comes as a hatchback or a sedan, with the option of either a 2.0L or 2.5L four-cylinder engine. This vehicle is well received for its high-tech capabilities, interior comfort, and good looks. Both vehicles have a well-crafted interior with the latest cutting-edge technology including a smartphone capable infotainment system, LED instrument panel, and Active Driving Display. And the G-Vectoring Control Plus system enhances the vehicle’s controllability by automatically adjusting the engine to balance the vehicle whenever it enters corners or sharp turns.

Mazda CX-30

Mazda’s CX-30 SUV debuted in 2019 and represents a new generation of fuel economic SUVs, boasting a sleek design, high tech gadgets, and delivering an outstanding driving experience. The vehicle’s fuel economy ranges from 5.9 – 6.3 litres per 100 km and can travel 833km2 on a $100 tank ($2 per litre)—that’s the equivalent of travelling from Auckland to Nelson without stopping.

With the use of the latest cutting-edge technology and systems, the CX-30 provides a relaxing, safe, and responsive ride. It employs a wide array of gadgets and systems including:

  1. Anti-lock brakes which improve the manoeuvrability of a vehicle during any sudden braking.
  1. A stability control system which automatically slows down and brakes when it senses that vehicle is out of control. Traction Control and Hill Launch Assist systems help the vehicle drive through steep or difficult terrain.
  1. An anti-theft device that disables engine ignition if the original key is not used.

Want a Mazda at an affordable price?

MotorCo distinguishes itself as a leading car dealership by only selling cars that are in perfect condition. There are a variety of components in a vehicle that need to be checked on routinely to avoid sudden breakdowns, and from air filters to coolants, these elements generally ensure that engine oil does not solidify and overheat, potentially damaging the interior of your vehicle. In this blog post, we learn about the role of engine oil in your car, and what you can do to keep it running clean. For anyone looking to buy used cars in New Zealand, it’s important to practice these basic maintenance routines as all cars (used or not) require maintenance and upkeep.

Why is Clean Oil Important?

The function of oil is to lubricate moving engine parts so that they do not overheat when they rub together. Failing to regularly change your oil not only damages the internal combustion engine but other components as well, and if oil is not changed frequently, it will eventually solidify and turn into sludge, resulting in oil not covering the engine and its various components.

Change Your Oil Regularly

Routinely changing engine oil is a standard practice that is vital for the maintenance of a vehicle. The general rule of the thumb is to change your vehicle’s engine oil at least once every 5,000 miles, or once every 3 – 6 months. It’s also important to remember to replace the oil filter with a new one every time you change oil, as the filter experiences a slow build-up of sediments. Not replacing your filter will eventually result in it becoming clogged, slowing down, or halting the movement of oil into the engine of your car.

Maintaining the Cooling System

A vehicle avoids overheating with the use of a cooling system consisting of a radiator, radiator fluid thermostat, and water pump. Coolant liquid is released and circulated through the engine by the water pump when the engine overheats, as determined by the thermostat. Antifreeze liquid can also heat up the vehicle when it is getting too cold. A coolant container has maximum and minimum guide marks which indicate when it should be topped up and inspecting coolant levels at least twice a year is the general rule of the thumb. If the engine is running too hot or too cold, the oil can also be affected.

Get Your Engine Checked

MotorCo is Auckland’s most trusted dealership and one of the most popular places to buy second-hand cars. We offer comprehensive vehicle servicing and repairs with the expertise of skilled and experienced technicians, guaranteeing that your vehicle passes its warranty of fitness, and keeping you safe on the road.

A common myth about hybrid cars is that they are more expensive to maintain and service than conventional cars due to the high-tech components used in hybrid cars, but in fact, their maintenance costs are not that much different. That said, some parts of hybrid used cars do need greater attention. Check out the tips below, to learn more about what you need to pay attention to when caring for a hybrid at home.

1. Inspect the Battery

The key component and x-factor that gives a hybrid vehicle its fuel efficiency is its High Voltage Hybrid System Battery. Hybrids rely on electricity generated by this battery to give it its fuel efficiency. Frosty weather can affect the battery charge, so it’s best to get it warmed up first before driving off on a winter’s day. On the other hand, the capacity and life span of a hybrid battery can be severely reduced if the vehicle is left parked in extremely hot conditions for weeks at a time. If you’re planning to travel overseas for a while, make sure you park your hybrid in a garage or another shady area to avoid the hot sun.

2. Routine Engine Checks

Thanks to their battery power, hybrid engines have slower wear and tear, requiring less maintenance than standard conventional petrol vehicles. However, this doesn’t make them totally immune from deterioration, so they should still be routinely serviced just like any other vehicle.

3. Regularly Check the Oil

Hybrid cars have longer oil change intervals because they use the engine far less than non-hybrid cars. This of course means less work, but it does also make it easier to forget about oil changes altogether. An engine with overused oil could potentially damage the battery, due to lack of lubrication in the various parts of the vehicle.

4.  Keep an Eye on the Cooling System

Hybrids can be vulnerable to overheating because they use a regenerative braking system which generates a lot of heat, so it’s important to make sure that a hybrid’s cooling system is in top condition.

The cooling system consists of coolant; a liquid mixture which cools down the radiator and engine. It’s important to ensure that the coolant reservoir tank is constantly filled above its minimum level mark, otherwise there will not be enough coolant to prevent the engine and radiator from overheating, causing major damage.

5. Don’t Forget the Tyres

The renowned fuel efficiency of a hybrid wouldn’t exist without good tyres. Having the right tyres with the proper pressure will ensure that your hybrid lives up to its reputation. Hybrids have lower rolling resistance compared to other cars, so it’s essential to ensure that you get good tyres with balanced pressure.

6. Routine Maintenance

Like any car, a routine maintenance schedule will prolong the life span of a hybrid vehicle and sustain its performance, delivering a smooth, clean driving experience.

Want A Hybrid Vehicle That’s Affordable?

We deliver full quality Japanese import cars in the Auckland area, and all our imported vehicles have been thoroughly inspected to the highest standard to ensure you get a car with optimal performance.
